The word ladder puzzle was invented by Lewis Carroll — yes, theAlice in Wonderland author — who published the first one in 1877 under the name "Doublets." His original example turned HEAD into TAIL. The format stuck around for a reason: it's simple to explain, genuinely hard to master, and rewards a specific kind of lateral thinking that crosswords and anagrams don't really touch.
